Bree Street has, over the past five years, become the restaurant/bar/fun street in Cape Town. It’s tough to pick, but these are five of my favourites. Do you have any must-visit spots on Bree?

Chefs Warehouse & Canteen
What: Canteen-style eatery serving outstanding plates of tapas by the chef’s favourite chef Liam Tomlin. Expect plain wooden benches, cramped quarters, no reservations and sometimes grumpy service.
Tip: Closes at 8pm and patrons will stare you down for a spot. Arrive for an early lunch or early/later dinner. Pick the tapas board for two – excellent value and the only way to go. Nice wines on offer too.
The small pantry of select grocery items and the fridges with free range eggs, good bacon, and other delights are worth a browse before you go.

Charango
What: Peruvian-inspired food in a Brooklyn-aesthetic restaurant that spills onto the streets. Packed since opening.
Tip: Before dinner a small tapas menu is available. It’s not as good as the main menu. Order mains and sides and share.

Clarke’s Diner
What: Loved by hipsters since it opened, Clarke’s is known for its hand cut burgers on brioche (on the small side though), greasy breakfasts and chocolate tart as well as a coffee stop for freelancers.
Tip: They do a good variety of breakfasts and freshly pressed juices. I attended a breakfast party in the courtyard – good option for a celebration.

Culture Cheese Club
What: A cheese deli that features an excellent selection of South African cheeses, including raw milk cheeses and milks, fermented products like kefir and kombucha. The restaurant serves a fun selection of dishes with cheese from risotto to grilled sarmies and platters.
Tip: They do stock kefir grains (milk and water) for home fermentation and will sell small quantities of cheese so you can buy a variety to try. Cheese picnic for dinner, anyone?

Door 221
What: Small and fussy. The design doesn’t feel contrived, orders are placed at the small bar and the snacks aren’t too bad – grilled chicken wings, cheesy fries are sure to line the belly.
Tip: They do good tacos
